Program

Our high school student exchange program is an educational initiative that allows students to immerse themselves in a different cultural and academic environment by studying in Jasper, Indiana or Pfaffenweiler, Germany. The exchange program, which is typically for four weeks, pairs students to live with a host family, which further enhances the cultural experience.  Several options are available for students who wish to extend their exchange experience. The typical size of an exchange class is currently 15 – 20 students.  During odd number calendar years, students from Pfaffenweiler travel to Jasper, and during even number calendar years, students from Jasper travel to Pfaffenweiler.

The History of the Exchange Program

The initial Sister Cities of Jasper high school student exchange program between Jasper, Indiana, and Pfaffenweiler, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany, occurred in the spring of 1986.  During this initial exchange, Jasper hosted three high school students from Pfaffenweiler, accompanied by their German teacher. This visitation was followed in May 1986 with five Jasper students visiting Pfaffenweiler, and joining their counterparts in attending the consolidated school in Staufen. The student exchange, managed by the Sister Cities of Jasper, has continued in perpetuity.

This program has positively impacted our communities and has strengthened the bond between the Sister Cities. Many of these our students and host families consider each other family and continue to keep in touch.
